Integrating Legacy Energy Meters to a LoRaWAN Smart Grid

Integrating old electric energy meters into the current smart grid systems on the Internet of Things (IoT) is a research, development, and innovation challenge that must evolve in a sustainable manner in the face of technological progress. A significant number of meters are replaced with new models that incorporate current technologies such as LoRaWAN , NB-IoT, and bluetooth to enable smart grid integration. However, obsolete energy meters can be used as a foundation for attaching devices/network interface card (NIC) requiring requirement update, development, testing, and reliability data verification. Methodologies and approaches for reengineering, evolution, and systems development are presented, along with the high-level steps required to adapt to new technological solutions.
