Innovative LoRaWAN Partnerships Between Universities and Local Communities

The challenge with IoT is that most users focus on data collected not on the infrastructure facilitating the transport of data. This lack of interest maps to lack of expertise in deploying and managing sensors, a state very apparent in the academic environment. This retardant to the adoption of IOT by researchers is a limiting factor to these domain experts developing IOT based solutions in collaboration with local communities. In this presentation Ciprian Popoviciu, Director of the Center for IoT Engineering & Innovation at East Carolina University, describes the deployment of a university wide, production level LoRaWAN based sensing platform that turned the entire University campus and surrounding areas into a lab supporting multiple research and solution development projects of interest to the local community.
